Launch of OGGS Mega Cupcakes

OGGS have announced launching its OGGS Mega Caramel & Vanilla Cupcakes in UK retailers from 4 September as they urge shoppers to make more ethical decisions in the cakes they buy.

The cakes are available in Tesco and Ocado from 4 September, priced at UK£9 RRP. With nine large vanilla sponges with caramel and vanilla frosting, the new cupcakes from the company are made using OGGS Aquafaba plant-based egg alternative instead of eggs, creating cakes that the company claims is kinder to chickens and the planet.

The launch comes alongside new research commissioned by the company looking into the ethics of UK cakes, with emphasis on the condition of chickens used to produce eggs found in most products.

Most shoppers said that they make ethical decisions about the shell eggs they use as 92% buy free range when possible, but the findings from the research show that this doesn’t apply to cakes bought, when the egg is used as an ingredient.

According to a report by the British Hen Welfare Trust, some of the biggest UK cake producers use mostly barn and some cage eggs in their bakes. 67% ofthose asked said they weren’t aware that most cakes sold in UK supermarkets use eggs from barn or caged chickens as opposed to free range eggs or no eggs at all in the recipe.

89% said that knowing this, they would be more likely to buy from a cake brand that doesn’t use eggs from barn or caged chickens.

OGGS’ range of cruelty free cakes are made without egg and instead use OGGS Aquafaba – a plant-based egg alternative which, according to OGGS, have 72% less CO2 than cakes with eggs. They come packaged in 100% recycled and recyclable plastic trays.

The company, which was founded in 2019, reported that purchases of OGGS products have reduced the need for over six million eggs, saved over 2000 tonnes of CO2 and given over a million chickens a ‘week off’.

“We all like to think that we make the most responsible choices, but this new research shows that this thinking doesn’t apply to cake. By choosing cruelty free cake, we can still enjoy all our favourite treats without compromise,” said Hannah Carter, Founder and CEO at OGGS. “Our new Mega Cupcakes give shoppers a delicious opportunity to celebrate and share, while making a positive impact to animals and the planet.”

“We’re so excited to launch the first plant-based celebration cupcakes with OGGS. Providing an ethical, inclusive bakery option for special occasions means we can treat our customers and our planet in a mega way,” commented Nikhil Kapila-O’Shea, Assistant Buyer for Cake at Tesco.
