Swiss bakery business Aryzta has announced the appointment of Michael Schai, a former employee of the company, as its chief executive officer, effective January 1, 2025.
Upon Schai’s appointment, Urs Jordi, the current interim CEO, will step down and focus on his role as Aryzta’s chairman and board member.
Schai, currently the CEO of Lindt & Sprüngli’s Australian operations, has previously worked with Aryzta from 2015 to 2018. During his tenure, he held positions such as managing director for Asia Pacific and global strategic business lead for McDonald’s, one of Aryzta’s significant clients.
Schai is recognised for his extensive experience in the global food industry, having worked across Australia, Asia-Pacific, and Europe.
Alejandro Legarda, chair of Aryzta’s governance, nomination, and sustainability committee, commented on the appointment: “The board’s thorough succession planning process has resulted in the selection of an outstanding candidate in Michael Schai. He possesses the leadership values, industry knowledge, and international commercial expertise we sought during our extensive recruitment process. With these skills, we are confident Schai will continue to drive Aryzta’s performance.”
Legarda also praised Urs Jordi’s tenure as interim CEO: “The board unanimously appointed Jordi as interim CEO in November 2020. During his time, Jordi navigated the company through significant financial risks and business uncertainties. He leaves the role having established stable management, returned the company to organic growth, and significantly improved business performance.”
Legarda concluded with gratitude: “On behalf of the board, I want to express our deep appreciation for Jordi’s commitment, passion, and dedication to Aryzta’s turnaround and success. We also extend our thanks to all Aryzta employees for their unwavering commitment to the company’s success.”
