CEO Karen Dear discusses how the CBA supports bakers in preserving tradition, embracing innovation, and thriving in a changing industry
With over two decades at the Craft Bakers Association, Karen Dear brings unmatched expertise and passion to her role as CEO. From preserving artisanal skills and championing sustainability to advocating for craft bakers at a government level, Karen shares how the CBA is empowering its members to navigate challenges, embrace innovation, and thrive in an ever-evolving industry.
Karen, what are some of the key trends you’ve observed in the craft baking industry, and how is the Craft Bakers Association supporting its members in adapting to these changes?
The craft baking industry is constantly evolving, driven by key trends such as the rising demand for healthier options like plant-based and low-sugar products, alongside a growing emphasis on sustainability and locally sourced ingredients. Additionally, there is a renewed interest in traditional and heritage baking techniques, reflecting consumers’ desire for authenticity.
The CBA supports its members by offering insights into these trends and regularly survey members to find out what trends work and what don’t. We also connect bakers with suppliers and experts who can help them adapt their offerings to meet changing consumer demands. By fostering innovation and staying informed, we help craft bakers remain competitive and relevant in a dynamic market.
Craft baking is rooted in tradition and artisanal skills. How is the CBA working to preserve and promote these skills in an industry increasingly influenced by automation and technology?
Craft baking is at the heart of our association’s mission, and we work tirelessly to preserve the artistry and traditions of the trade. Through our support, Business Day, communications and partnerships with the educational establishments in the baking industry, we are passionate about ensuring that baking skills are passed over to the next generation. We also celebrate craft bakers through awards and events, showcasing the value of handmade products in an increasingly automated world. While technology offers efficiency, we advocate for its use in ways that complement, rather than replace, the personal touch that defines craft baking.
Sustainability is a major focus across industries. What role does the CBA see for craft bakers in adopting sustainable practices, and how is the association supporting these efforts?
Sustainability is a cornerstone of modern baking, and the CBA actively works to support members in adopting eco-friendly practices. 2024 saw the CBA launch its Sustainability initiative through its Interactive Bakery, which is a collaboration with industry supporters from the baking industry, which allows us to offer guidance on sourcing local, sustainable ingredients to reducing waste and energy consumption, sustainable packaging options using practical resource. The association believes that craft bakers, with their close ties to local communities, are uniquely positioned to lead by example in sustainability efforts.
Bakers face numerous challenges, from rising ingredient costs to competition from larger chains. What strategies or resources does the CBA provide to help members thrive in this environment?
Rising costs, National Living Wage, National Insurance will be significant issues for our members in 2025. We also have an ongoing dialogue with the government departments responsible for SME’s and are vocal about the lack of support and consultation with SME’s when government introduce legislation which continually has a negative effect on the craft baking industry. We will continue to ensure the craft baking industry voices are heard at the national level. To support our members we will continue to provide market insights, supplier discounts, and access to legal, HR and Health and Food Safety advice tailored to the craft baking industry. Together with networking opportunities through our annual business day and networking events, this allows our members to share ideas and strategies, we emphasise differentiation—whether through quality, innovation, or community connection—to help craft bakers carve out their niche.
