Bradman Lake automates bagel packaging

Bradman Lake recently developed a new on-edge collator to automate the packaging of bagels into polypropylene bags. The system was designed to meet the needs of a New York based bagel manufacturer, the company has said, who were looking into expanding their sales to include retail stores and automate their packaging line.

The customer’s product shape was irregular, with various different toppings, making it challenging to collate on edge. With the help of the company’s expertise, its requirements for slicing and collating their bagels on edge was fulfilled with the use of a newly developed bagel slicer and collator, which was incorporated into Bradman Lake’s already established Ibonhart Bagel Bagging Machine.

The new collator is designed to provide the customer full control of the product compared with other systems in the market that use a gravity feeder. The machine offers several benefits including easy operation with fewer adjustments required, improved accuracy and reliability when handling variable product collations, shaped and sizes, with increased efficiency and faster speeds of up to 60 bags per minute.

“We are always looking for ways to improve our machines so that we can provide customers with quality and reliable machines that increase efficiency and productivity,” said John Marlee, Managing Director of Bradman Lake. “As each bagel is handled individually, our new on-edge collator is ideal for customers who need to pack bagel with variable tolerances, shapes and sizes.”

Visitors to the company’s stand at interpack will see in action the company’s new, high-speed pressure-less IMF Intelligent Motion Feeder, specifically designed to meet the challenges of today’s packaging industry by improving efficiency and flexibility to increase profitability.

The IMF will automatically feed products into the FT120 Flow Wrapper. The wrapped products then enter the DRT Dual Racetrack Robotic Toploader, which picks and places products into cartons formed and glued on the HSS High Speed Servo Driven Carton Former. Filled cartons are transferred to the IL120 Carton Closer and are sealed using a hot melt adhesive.

For the side load approach, Bradman Lake will display the SL903 End Load Cartoner that erects, loads and closes cartons within one frame. A wide range of optional features including a low-height carton hopper are available to enable the machin to be adapted to meet customer’s requirements.
