Breaking Bread – Francesco Pelliccia

International Bakery Magazine gets to know Francesco Pelliccia, EMEA Segment Development Manager at Amcor (Bakery & Produce)…

How did you get involved in this industry?

My interest in the packaging industry goes back to my studies at the International Business School in Madrid. At an Open Day – Amcor came in and gave an insight into the world of packaging and its graduate program. I have always been interested in the FMCG sector and the packaging industry offered a different perspective. I applied and joined the graduate programme in 2022.

What stood out for you from the Graduate Programme?

Taking part in a graduate program took me to Poland, where I worked at two sites: first in Złotów, where I was the first-ever graduate hire, and later in Łódź, which offered more of an international working environment. My third site was in Burgos, Spain, where I joined the commercial team, originally focusing on the snacks and confectionary sector.

What do you most enjoy about your job?

One aspect of my role that I find particularly rewarding is building relationships with customers in the UK, the Netherlands and Italy. This provides great exposure and learning opportunities at the start of my career in the bakery sector. It is also valuable to gain insight into ongoing trends and developments in the bakery industry, and how these differ across regions.

What would you like to do if you were to change careers?

I would probably explore a role that is the first point of call for prospective customers, such as sales. I love meeting customers face to face, with all the interesting engagements that come with it!

What is your favourite baked good?

My favourite baked good is definitely a torta al testo, which is a flatbread typical of my hometown in Umbria. It is similar to an Italian piadina flatbread, but is thicker and cooked in a special pan called a testo. The torta al testo is something my family make and enjoy together, so it has always been a favourite of mine.

Can you share one of your favourite industry trends?

I have had the opportunity to work in different product sectors, each offering their own challenges and product-specific needs. The bakery sector is a fast-developing segment that is ripe for innovation, particularly when it comes to more sustainable and user-friendly packaging.

What is your favourite way to spend a Sunday afternoon?

On the weekend, I love to play and watch football. Particularly on a Sunday, as it is the traditional day of football in Italy.

What is one of your personal goals for this year?

In 2025, a key personal goal is to explore new cities and countries. Travel is a keen interest of mine, so I have lots of exciting plans for this year. I am also looking forward to building my knowledge of the bakery sector!
