Cake Box expands with 150th store and new production site

Cream cakes specialist Cake Box has opened its 150th store, located in Romford, Essex. It follows investment in the business’ expansion which will also see operations at its new bakery and distribution centre in Coventry begin shortly. The site will complement existing facilities in Enfield and Bradford, Cake Box said.

It also represents the company’s 66th store opening since it was listed on the London Stock Exchange in June 2018.

Alongside the store roll-out programme, Cake Box has continued to make further progress on strategic initiatives including the development of its own-brand delivery platform which complements its existing click & collect and third-party delivery offerings, it said.

Its half year results showed online sales had increased 51% year on year and are now worth £4m. However, sales and pre-tax profits at the egg-free specialist had dipped.

Cake Box has also rolled out NPD which includes improved loaf cake ranges, with gluten-free and vegan options, alongside ready-made, egg-free custard.

“We’re thrilled to have reached this landmark in the Cake Box growth story. This is testament to the entrepreneurialism and quality of our franchisees and the resilience of our business model, which has shone through over the last 12 months, in a difficult environment,” said CEO Sukh Chamdal.

“The world is still an uncertain place, but the progress we’ve made in bringing our unique proposition to more customers than ever gives us confidence that we will continue our growth journey and emerge a bigger, better business.”
