Compostable bags for bread

KM Packaging

Earth & Wheat’s ‘wonky bread’ has found eco-friendly packaging in the form of a home-compostable bag, courtesy of packaging company KM Packaging. Prior to this, Earth & Wheat had been using plastic bags.

Earth & Wheat works to directly connect UK bakeries with customers looking to reduce their food waste. They deliver fresh, tasty bread that would otherwise have been wasted due to appearance standards or overproduction. Sustainability is at the forefront of the company’s mission, as they aim to reduce food waste as well as plastic waste and carbon emissions.

The home-compostable bags, produced by KM Packaging, offer an eco-friendly and sustainable alternative to consumers, and provide Earth & Wheat with the opportunity to print on the bag for branding purposes and to be compatible with the company’s automated bagging machines.

C-Bag, from KM Packaging’s C-Range, which has been developed in partnership with Treetop Biopak, was well suited for this. The C-Range of compostable bio-plastic packaging has the similar look and feel of conventional plastic and includes shrink wrap, stretch wrap, cling film, adhesive tape, and nets.

“Our mission is to reduce food waste in the UK, and we’re always looking at innovative ways to become even more sustainable,” said James Eid, Founder of Earth & Wheat. “By using home compostable bags in our bread boxes, we have found a great alternative to using plastic.”

The new bags can be disintegrating in a compost heap and biodegrade into carbon dioxide, water and biomass. Printing on the bags has strengthened the brand, generated more interest and increased customer subscriptions.

The C-Bag protects and preserves the wonky bread produced by Earth & Wheat. It is bio-based from renewable resources, can be used as bin liners for organic waste collection, as well as meeting the Soil Association Standard for packaging materials.
