Grupo Bimbo achieves 93% recycled packaging

Grupo Bimbo, a leading bakery company, has made significant strides in enhancing its sustainability efforts, achieving a noteworthy milestone in 2023. The company announced that 93% of its packaging is now composed of recyclable materials, a key accomplishment highlighted in its latest annual report titled ‘Behind our Actions’. This report outlines Grupo Bimbo’s progress and objectives under its Sustainability Strategy aimed at 2030 and 2050.

A central goal of the company is to ensure that all packaging becomes recyclable, biodegradable, or compostable by 2025. In pursuit of this objective, Grupo Bimbo reduced approximately 272 tons of plastic in 2023 alone.

Further illustrating its commitment, the company reported a 39% reduction in packaging weight for its Hamburger Bread in the US, a 29% reduction for Bagel Thin packaging in the UK, and a 25% reduction for Cruapan Bread packaging in the Iberia region during the same period.

In addition to reducing plastic use, Grupo Bimbo has launched initiatives to increase the incorporation of recycled content in its packaging materials. Notably, its Arnold bread packaging in the US and Pan Blanco and Pan Integral bread packaging in Spain now contain 30% recycled material. The company has also integrated recycled materials into the trays used for product transportation in Mexico and South America, utilising recycled packaging from its own supply chain.

The report also underscores Grupo Bimbo’s commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Currently, 92% of the company’s global electricity comes from renewable sources such as solar and wind power. Moreover, the company has expanded its fleet to include 2,693 electric delivery vehicles, contributing to a total of 6,198 alternative fuel vehicles.

Rafael Pamias, CEO of Grupo Bimbo, expressed satisfaction with the progress made in 2023, emphasising achievements such as reaching 95% positive nutrition in its daily bread, pastries, and breakfast portfolio. Pamias noted that 27 of the 35 countries where Grupo Bimbo operates already use renewable electricity. He concluded by applauding the company’s milestones published in the annual report, reinforcing Grupo Bimbo’s purpose of ‘Nourishing a better world.’
