Iconic 120-Year-Old Bakery Chain to Close All Stores

A cherished family-run bakery chain, with a history spanning 120 years, has announced it will permanently close all its locations, resulting in the loss of 100 jobs.

Founded in 1905, Oddie’s Bakery has been renowned for its freshly baked loaves and signature pastry pies, serving communities across East Lancashire, including Burnley, Colne, Foulridge, Nelson, Padiham, and Todmorden.

The company confirmed that its 16 branches will close their doors for the final time on Saturday, 11 January, marking the end of an era for the much-loved bakery.

In a statement issued to The Sun, a spokesperson said:
“We are deeply saddened to confirm the closure of Oddie’s Bakery and Oddie’s Shops on Saturday, January 11, after 120 years of business. This decision has been incredibly difficult and comes as a devastating blow to our loyal staff and the communities we serve.”

The bakery, like many businesses, struggled to recover from the economic challenges brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite significant efforts to restructure and regain financial stability, including branch closures, product range adjustments, and staffing reductions, these measures proved insufficient to secure the company’s future.

The statement continued:
“Over recent years, and compounded by the pandemic, the business has faced unprecedented challenges. The economic slowdown has profoundly impacted our ability to operate at the levels we were accustomed to.”

The announcement follows a previous attempt to save the business through a last-minute sale, which unfortunately fell through, leaving the company with no viable path forward.

Director Lara Oddie described the closure as “heartbreaking” and reflected on the bakery’s enduring legacy in the region:
“This is an incredibly difficult moment for all of us. Oddie’s has been a part of East Lancashire’s fabric for generations, and the loss will be felt deeply by our team and our customers. We thank everyone who has supported us over the years and who helped make Oddie’s what it is today.”

The closure of Oddie’s Bakery marks the end of a significant chapter in the region’s culinary and cultural history.
