Katie Cross, owner of Cake or Death bakery in Devon.

If you could change anything in the industry, what would it be?

We’d be encouraging a more inclusive environment in kitchens and bakeries, so everyone feels comfortable to enter the industry

What three traits define you?

Self-motivated, ethical, hard-working

What’s the coolest (or most important) trend you see today?

Veganism! It’s great that people are embracing it as it contributes towards slowing climate change. Plus, with the bigger corporate companies making vegan food more readily available, it makes it easier for anyone to try

How do you define success?

That people love Cake or Death’s products and buy repeatedly, and a happy team making them

What made you want to work for the industry?

A love of food and fascination with baking. Also, a desire to run my own business

What would you most like to tell your 13-year-old self?

You can totally make a success out of selling cake!

If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would you meet?

Eddie Izzard because she’s absolutely hilarious! Cake or Death was actually named after a sketch of hers

What’s your favourite aspect about working in the industry?

Customers – our product brings so much joy to people and I love receiving their messages and talking to them in Cake or Death’s new bakery in Exeter

What was the best piece of advice you ever received?

You should make your business vegan, it’s the future. I was told this in 2019 just before I quit my job

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?

Running the most successful letterbox brownie company in the UK
