Lesley’s career spans thirty years across Scotland’s food and drink industry, combining brand building, commercial growth and industry leadership. From Drambuie and Nairn’s Oatcakes to Kettle Produce, Macsween and Baxters, she has developed an understanding of consumers, innovation and the realities of running food businesses. As Marketing and Communications Director at Quality Meat Scotland, she led campaigns reaching 93% of Great British households and generating £12.30 in retail value for every £1 invested.
Since becoming Chief Executive of Scottish Bakers and National Food & Drink Training in September 2023, Lesley has applied that experience to strengthening the bakery sector’s commercial prospects, skills pipeline and collective voice.
Driving Commercial Growth and Industry Recognition
A standout achievement has been the successful relaunch of Scottish Baker of the Year. Simplified judging, refreshed categories and clearer scoring contributed to a 25% increase in business entries. The launch campaign secured coverage across television, radio, national press and digital channels, driving a 30% sector uplift in Empire biscuit sales. This demonstrates Lesley’s focus on turning industry recognition into tangible commercial benefits. Alongside these achievements, the 2025 World Championship Scotch Pie Awards attracted a record of 539 entries from 88 companies.
The consumer brand and Ultimate Scottish Bakers Trail have created opportunities to celebrate bakery businesses, craftsmanship and food tourism.
Championing Skills and Future Industry Talent
Demonstrating a strong commitment to skills development, she led the transfer and integration of 200 apprentices and 20 employers following another provider’s liquidation, protecting learners’ progression and continuity for businesses. NFDT now supports approximately 500 new apprenticeships starting annually.
Lesley has strengthened the organisation’s engagement with government, funding bodies and industry partners, advocating apprenticeship investment, business costs and regulation. The 2026 manifesto and member insight reports connect policy priorities with practical support for growth.
As a woman in industry leadership, her aim is to demonstrate that commercial ambition and supportive leadership belong together. She introduced staff progression, appraisal and wellbeing support, while building a collaborative culture. Her contribution is about helping businesses succeed and giving people opportunities to develop and thrive.
