Professional judging of Scottish Baker concludes

Bakery customers throughout Scotland continue to have their say in the Scottish Baker of the Year Customer Choice category, as on 14 March 2023, 50 industry experts came together to taste test every entry at the much-anticipated Scottish Baker of the Year Judging Day in Dunfermline.

This years’ crop of entries included almost 650 bakes from 70 bakers with accolades on offer for a range of categories including scones, loaves, savoury items, morning rolls, individual cakes and biscuits as well as French and Danish style pastries and Free-from bread, biscuits and cakes. The ultimate prize on offer is to be crowned Scottish Baker of the Year.

“Every day in Scotland we can enjoy a buttery for breakfast, a sandwich made from a fresh loaf for lunch, afternoon tea with mouth-watering sweet treats and a fresh piping hot pie for dinner,” explained Alasdair Smith of Scottish Bakers. “But the bakers who carefully make the pies, scones, loaves, savouries, morning rolls, individual cakes and biscuits sold in Scotland every day are the hidden gem of our economy and of our culture, and we are delighted to give Scottish bakers the chance to shine and showcase their skills.”

Professional judging is now completed – with International Bakery on hand to judge – but customer voting for the Scottish Baker of the Year ‘Customer Choice’ awards is still open on 5 April. Shoppers vote for their favourite bakery from which the association will identify a ‘Customer Choice’ winner in each of the four business categories; Craft Baker, Retail Craft Baker, Wholesale Baker and Bakery Cafe.

“We are delighted to give the public a say with our Customer Choice awards. It’s a great opportunity for our members to reach out to their customers and communities and get people talking about great, traditional Scottish baking,” said Ian McGhee, President of Scottish Bakers.

Voting can be done by asking your local bakery for a unique QR code to scan or by voting in store now. Alternatively, log onto the competition website www.bakeroftheyear.scot to vote.

The winner will be announced at a gala dinner at the Glasgow Hilton on Saturday, 6 May 2023.
