UK cake manufacturer Sponge Cakes has taken a significant step towards sustainable production, following the installation of a bespoke solar energy system at its manufacturing facility in Holt, Norfolk.
Delivered in partnership with RenEnergy, the installation is designed to meet approximately 32% of the company’s energy requirements, supporting both operational efficiency and long-term environmental goals.
The project followed a detailed assessment of Sponge’s energy consumption patterns alongside an evaluation of the site’s physical environment. The resulting solution spans multiple roof areas and has been carefully configured to maximise energy yield while accommodating key operational features such as air vents.
A tailored approach to energy efficiency
With a total installed capacity of 270kWp, the system comprises 660 solar panels and five inverters, delivering a substantial renewable energy contribution to the site’s manufacturing operations.
The installation is expected to generate annual carbon savings of approximately 82,000kg of CO₂, while also reducing Sponge Cakes’ overall energy costs – providing both environmental and financial benefits.
Founded in 2000 through its café roots at Byfords of Holt, Sponge Cakes has grown into a nationally recognised brand, producing a wide variety of premium cakes distributed across the UK via next-day delivery. As energy prices continue to rise, the company identified renewable energy as a key area of investment to future-proof its operations and reduce its environmental impact.
The project highlights a growing trend within the bakery sector, as manufacturers increasingly turn to renewable energy solutions to balance sustainability commitments with cost efficiency. By integrating solar power into its production infrastructure, Sponge Cakes demonstrates how mid-sized bakery operations can take meaningful steps towards decarbonisation without compromising output or quality.
