US Summer Snack Index

Ahead of the summertime Frito-Lay and Quaker have released the first-ever joint US Summer Snack Index, sharing light on consumer preferences and habits to ensure unforgettable memories this season.

“Food is an important centerpiece for the joy that summertime brings,” said Denise Lefebvre, Senior Vice President, PepsiCo Foods R&D. “At Frito-Lay and Quaker, we are deeply invested in understanding what our consumers want so they can have the right flavors, variety, snack styles, and even packaging options all season.”

The Summer Snack index marks more than four years since Frito-Lay issued its inaugural trend report. As snacking continues to play a large role in the lives of Americans as 49% note enjoying three or more snacks per day, as the recurring report is an important yardstick for evolving food preferences and purchasing decisions through the lens of evolving consumer behaviour.

“Americans snack more in the summer, whether they’re inside, outdoors, or on the move. From boosting road trip morale to complementing an outdoor potluck, today’s data confirms the integral role that snacks will play in many of this season’s shared moments and activities,” Denise added.

Key insights from the report show that snacks are often enjoyed during travelling, as 85% of Americans reported planning their snack consumption before travelling greatly reduces the stress of a long road trip; snacks are frequently shared as 74% noted ‘something for everyone’ and ‘easy to share’ (63%) are ideal attributes for snacks this summer; and snacks play a big part in the enjoyment of outdoor activities as nearly 60% of respondents say snacks can make or break beach days and convenience is key as the survey found consumers are more likely to purchase snacks that are conveniently packaged (79%) with individually snacks preferred, according to 52%.
