Wonderbrands has launched a fresh bakery product in Canada developed specifically for preparation in an air fryer, reflecting the growing influence of domestic cooking appliances on bakery product development.
Wonder AirCrisp was announced on 24 September 2026 and is being introduced initially through selected major retailers in Ontario.
The pull-apart bakery format is designed to be separated into individual portions and cooked in an air fryer for four minutes, producing a crisp exterior while maintaining a soft interior.
Available in Garlic & Herb, Jalapeño and Everything varieties, the range targets snacking, sharing and meal accompaniment occasions.
For industrial bakers, the development illustrates how changing consumer cooking habits can influence not only preparation instructions but also product formulation and physical format.
Designed around air frying
Rather than adapting an existing bakery product with additional cooking instructions, Wonderbrands says AirCrisp was developed specifically around air-fryer preparation.
The pull-apart format is intended to cook quickly while delivering contrasting crisp and soft textures.
“Air fryers have become part of everyday life because they make it incredibly easy to prepare food quickly, but the fresh bakery aisle really hasn’t been designed around that experience,” said Nina Abbott, Senior Director, Marketing at Wonderbrands.
The products are baked in Canada and contain no artificial flavours or colours. Enriched wheat flour, water and yeast are among the principal ingredients, with formulations varying between flavours.
Changing bakery occasions
The launch provides an example of bakery manufacturers developing products around preparation methods that sit between conventional fresh bakery and ready-to-cook convenience foods.
Air-fryer adoption has created opportunities across food categories by allowing consumers to heat products and add texture relatively quickly at home. For bakery manufacturers, this could support further development around breads, rolls, pastries and savoury sharing products intended to be finished immediately before consumption.
Such formats also introduce additional formulation considerations. Products need to withstand retail distribution as fresh bakery goods while delivering consistent texture, colour and heating performance when prepared using different domestic appliances.
